Living the #saltysideoflife
Take care of your health, your body will thank you for it
We all know that keeping our bodies and minds in top shape is important, but in the hustle and bustle of our day to day, it can be easy to forget to take care of our health, both mentally and physically. Modern conveniences have also made it unfortunately easy to create bad habits that can impact our health negatively.
It can be challenging to fight these conveniences as many will feel making healthy choices can sometimes be tougher. It doesn't have to be - Here are some small tips that we think can help create sustainable changes to our health without making huge changes to your lifestyle, and live the #saltysideoflife.
Less scrolling through social media
One of the most important steps to improve your health is to reduce your use of social media and power-hungry electronics. Social media scrolling can be an addictive activity that takes up a lot of our time and can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety as it takes away from truly social interactions and subconscious comparison to ‘perfect’ lives often portrayed on social media.
Additionally, the blue light emitted from our screens is linked to insomnia, headaches, and other health issues. Limiting your screen time and taking breaks from social media can greatly benefit your mental health while saving you money on power! Not to mention it's a huge time sink, and limiting social media can give you many hours back in your day.
Skip the fast food
One of the best ways to improve your physical health is to limit your processed and fast food intake. Cheeseburgers and other fast food items are high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, all of which can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Instead, focus on eating more whole, unprocessed foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. These are readily available in supermarkets and farmer’s markets
Grow your own vegetables
Growing your own vegetables is a great way to introduce more healthy foods into your diet. Tomatoes are an especially nutritious option, as they are rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and antioxidants. Growing tomatoes is relatively easy, and you can either start your own garden or purchase potted plants. Not only will this give you access to a fresh and healthy food source, but it’s also a great way to get some exercise and reduce stress.
Skip using the phone to check the time - use analog clocks instead!
Many of us now default to looking at our phones to find the time, whether it’s on the go or in the bedroom. As useful and convenient as this is, checking the time with your phone can be detrimental - besides the notifications and reminders you instantly have the urge to check and the blue light emitted that can prevent good sleep, the constant reminder of time can lead to increased anxiety and pressure. If you’re keeping your phone in your bedroom, your brain isn’t fully shutting down and it’s impeding an optimal night’s rest.
Analog clocks are a great alternative and can be a great tool for improving your mental health. An analog clock can help to reduce these feelings of stress and anxiety, as the lack of numbers and changing digits makes it easier to ignore the passage of time.
Prioritising healthy choices and building small healthy habits can have a huge impact on your overall health and well-being. While we've shared some easy tips to do this, there are so many other small changes you can make, whether it’s taking small steps to exercise, making small diet changes, or meditating for mental health and clarity.
